God isn't fair
How many times have you thought, “Life isn’t fair”? You don’t have to look very far to find injustice in this world. Because life isn’t fair, we have a hard time believing that there could be a good God reigning over His creation. The truth is worse than we thought. God isn’t fair. God allowed our ancient grandparents to make a decision that would affect everyone that would come after them. In Genesis 1 after He created Adam and Eve, He said “Let them rule”. God put limits on Himself as God and determined to respect the free will decisions of these first humans and gave them dominion over the earth. Obviously, God was still God and ruled in heaven and over His creation but He abided by the self-imposed restriction on His deity of handing over stewardship of the earth to Adam Eve no matter the outcome.
The bad news
When Adam and Eve broke the prohibition of God and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they in essence chose to determine what was right and wrong for themselves apart from what God said was good and evil. This one act of rebellion caused all of creation to fall into something separate from what God originally intended. Not fair. The results were death, disease, sin, corruption and all that is wrong with the world. All of this was the natural result of man handing over his God given rulership of the earth to Satan.
Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Even worse news
This is why everyone born after Adam and Eve start out separated from God. Not fair. Proof of this separation is evidenced by personal sin. We have all heard the phrase and probably spoken it “Nobody is perfect”. This statement is truer than we realize as verified in Romans.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The unfair part is that we are born in this condition. It gets even worse. This sin results in death. This term describes separation from God and physical death.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death,
So we are born into death inherited from Adam resulting in our own personal sins, talk about unfair.
Some good news
But there is good news. God continues to be unfair for our benefit.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
God Himself came to earth and put on our skin and let us beat, torture, spit in His face and finally kill Him, even though He was innocent, just to demonstrate how badly He wants a relationship with us. His death paid our sin debt in full. Now that is unfair.
Some better news
But it gets even better.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
God won’t accept any payment or good deed in exchange for what He did for us. We can only come to Him, by faith, based on the death (payment for sin), the burial (proof of death) and resurrection (proof the payment was accepted) of Jesus. Now that is really unfair.
Some even better news
But it gets even better than that.
John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
Once we are in relationship with God through the person and work of Jesus Christ, we cannot be separated from Him ever again.
Romans 8:38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God isn't fair He is love
You see, in a fallen, sin filled world, God is not trying to be, what you might consider, “fair”. He is looking to express His love to the undeserving. Life isn’t fair, and the most unfair treatment you can ever experience is when you enter heaven by faith, based on what Christ did and not based on your ability to keep God’s commandments.
Galatians 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
All that keeps a person separated from the creator of the universe for time and eternity is their unwillingness to agree with God about their sinful condition and their rejection of the only solution for that condition.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the father but through Me.
